Boats & Fishing

BOATS

They come in all shapes and sizes from large cruisers and yachts down to a small tinny for fishing. Do you enjoy getting out on the water in a boat for a while?

Leave a comment about the great boats you have owned in the past and the boats you own now.

FISHING

What a great way to spend a few hours with a line in the water waiting for a bite. Fishing has changed over the years as there is now so much on market to tempt anyone who loves fishing but does it really work or are the old methods just as good?

Share your fishing adventures, where do you love to go fishing and what is your most exciting catch?

There must be some great fishing stories out there so join the fun and share your story.

It has been great to find some time to go fishing again while we were on holidays.  We stopped at a couple of places on the News South Wales coast and tried out the fishing in each place. Really enjoyed the fishing at South West Rocks as we spend a couple of days just fishing and having lots of fun.

Hope it is not to long till we go fishing again

Went fishing this morning and spent a few hours having fun.  We were fishing of the bank and caught some very small fish as well as some good sized ones. It was lots of fun.

Had a bit of a laugh as well as some guys fishing in a boat saw all that we were catching and headed over to where we were fishing.  The got very close to us and started casting in our HOT ZONE.  We both caught a couple of fish while they so close but they failed to hook anything so left after a while in disgust.

My Dad and Brother were fishing in Moreton Bay in the 70's in Dads 16 foot boat and my brother, being bored with fishing, was sitting on the side of the boat dangling his feet over the side in the water.  My Dad told him to put his feet inside of the boat "just in case a big shark comes along" to which my brother laughed off.  Not 2 minutes had passed (he did put his feet inside the boat) than a shark swam up beside the boat and Dad said it was longer than his boat.  He always loved to tell everyone this story and sadly both my Dad and Brother have now gone to the big fishing hole in the sky.

In 1967 my younger twin brothers and I travelled from Adelaide to Mt Gambier on the "Bluebird" train. We went to stay with a family on their farm outside Port MacDonnell. To our surprise the 3 sons from the family were Cray boat owners. We took turns in getting up at 4am to go out on their 24 foot boat and earn our keep for the holidays. After the usual settling in period of seasickness I was ok as long as I stayed up on deck. On one trip we were about 20 miles from port and 9 miles out from shore when the rudder cable broke. The Smith brothers took turns in holding a huge shifter on the large nut on the top of the rudder and holding the boat on course with the other brother operating the throttle and yelling instructions for the change in direction. It was, at the time, scary but was a great yarn to tell when I returned to school. On the following day one of my brothers went out with them and they caught 7 sharks which to me would have been more scary than the rudder incident.

At the tender age of 17 I left what I now realise would have been a really good job with a strong career path to take a job as deckhand on the Murray River on the MV Coonawarra paddle boat. Located at Murray Bridge SA, the boat travelled up stream to Morgan for 3 days with stops along the river at night. The return trip down stream took only 2 days as we were travelling with the flow of the current. The vessel was built on the shell of a river barge named the "L J Roberts". and was 100 years old when I was working on it. We would start work at 630 am and usually did not fall into bed until about 1030 at night. I only did four trips on it due to a huge turnover in staff. Jobs were so easy to get back then.

As a child we lived in the little fishing town of Sussex Inlet on the NSW south coast. We had cabins and about 4 clinker built boats with Chapman pup inboard motors. On Sundays my father would take me and my brothers out to sea in the largest of our boats, which was called with a lot of imagination, Number 1. It also had the largest motor, if memory serves it was a 1Hp. At that time in my life I was prone to travel and sea sickness without much provocation. So dad would take us out to sea, and sail about until I threw up, and that is where we would fish. He would let the boat drift and we would fish till about lunch time and catch a vast variety of fish and would be home in time for lunch. it was a different time then and the fish were more plentiful.

I love fishing and have shared lots of fishing adventures with Jeff.  We have gone fishing in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, there are some lovely spots around Australia to fish.  Years ago we were in a small boat fishing in the lakes at Metung in Victoria.  I caught a lovely big flathead, the biggest I had ever landed.  Jeff was cleaning the fish for me in the boat, he leaned over the side of the boat to wash the fish when it slipped out of his hand and was lost forever.  I do remind him ever now and then of the one that got away.
