Cars, Trucks & Utes

WHAT ARE YOU DRIVING NOW?

Is it the DREAM CAR that you have been waiting years to buy? It may be an old vintage car you have done up or are in the process of restoring or perhaps a hot rod. Is it an old beat up car that gets you where you need to go?

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST CAR YOU OWNED?

Your first car is probably a little different to the car you drive today. It probably had windows you wind down by hand, no air conditioning, no seatbelts, a hard bench seat not bucket seats and who could forget the cars with the venetian blinds in the back window. There were definitely no computers in the dashboard to tell you the outside temperature, you have forgotten to buckle up, or a door had been left ajar.

Join the fun and leave a comment about what you are driving now and your first car.

Thanks to all those who have left a comment as they are very interesting and make great reading.

My first wheels were a Honda 305 Dream motor bike that went like a cut snake but I thrashed it to death. Then came the Simca Aronde. I thrashed that too and managed to roll it but that didnt stop it. A new radiator and a bit of dent knocking and it served me a couple of years more till I signed up for a lovely and expensive (for me) 1963 Falcon Deluxe. Pranged that a couple years later before I had paid it off. I learned then to save up and pay cash for cars. Built myself a hot XK Falcon wagon next with a near new Norton Commando to go with it. (I still have the Norton) I still have a 1963 Falcon, a lovely white Futura with Red interior and only 80000 miles on the clock. I towed my van halfway round Australia with it. It shares the shed with a model T Ford, 64 Pontiac, 1970 Oldsmobile 98 convertible and a couple of Montesa motorbikes. There are a couple of projects too, 149 Mk V Jag, 56 Packard Clipper, 28 Dodge sedan and a 1939 Bedford ute. Its a busy life!

My first car was a FJ Holden which I customized, had every model up to HR all modifyed in some way, a couple of rear hot EH Holdens then built a 38 Chev Sloper Street Rod, I got it in 1979 & still have it, 2 years ago I got a HK Monaro which was to be my retirement project, am now retired so will see if I have still got it.

Since I was very young, I've always loved Rockabilly. Especially in my early teens I always went out of my way to dress and style my hair just like they did in the 50s. When I was able to get my driver's licence ( I learnt to drive in my Dad's Morris Oxford), I went looking for a 50s car, but being from a relatively poor family I couldn't afford much, so I settled for cheap $100 FB Holden I saw in a dodgy car yard, at least it looked the part.

In the last 3 years I've been lucky to own 3 Cadillacs, a 1955 Coupe, followed by a 1959 Caddy Fleetwood, and my latest is a 1960 Caddy Sedan DeVille.

I drive my '60 daily, still Left Hand Drive, and it makes the daily commute to work a real pleasure.

I seem to be stuck in the year that I arrived in Australia - 1965.  I have 1965 Buick Riviera, 1965 ap6 Valiant and a 1965 Vespa VBC Scooter.
My first car was a 1953 VW beetle.  Quite rare now.  I have had more than 20 Volkswagens over the years and still have a VW buggy.  I still drive a VW as our daily drive: a 2010 VW Passat CC Diesel.
Also ride a Honda ACE 1100, Kawasaki KLR 650 and a Royal Enfield 350 Bullet.
I have a very understanding wife.

I learnt to drive in a my Grandmothers Prince sitting along side of her steering and then going to the local footy oval and driving around. When I got my licence Dad bought me a 150cc vespa scooter, I had to push it to start it there was no kick start pedal. then I bought an FE holden, had that for a while and went up market to a 1963 EJ holden (WOW)  .After that I bought a brand new 1971 ESCORT, had that for quite a long time then traded it for a HK holden station wagon. Then in 1991 bought a 4lt ESCORT, in 1992 traded for a EA Falcon, traded in 1996 for an EB falcon. Kept that until 2003 and traded for a Toyota Conquest and then in 2005 we bought a brand new TOYOTA ALTISE which we still have, best car I have ever had. It is only a four cylinder but it has towed our caravan to Cairns, Darwin, Broom, Bright and from their back home along the Great Ocean Road and has never missed a beat. Total of about 20,000 kilometers.

Ah my 1955 Morris Minor I inherited from my older brother when he went overseas. When I sold it to buy a 'real' car, a 1958 FE Holden Special, it was still running, but had two broken pistons in the sump! But the FE Holden got me and a mate to Melbourne and back twice without missing a beat. Quite surprising as it had been a Mt Gambier taxi before I bought it! It was a great car for $100, and amazingly for an early Holden, NO rust, and the handbrake worked!

Learned to drive on Mum's 1967 VW Deluxe Beetle.  A great little car except when the 6 volt battery went flat... and that was every third day.  I had a Honda 250 motorcycle during my university days because parking was at a premium.  When I got married my wife had a car but I didn't.  When finances permitted I bought a second hand Datsun 1200 sedan which got me to work.  Our first brand new car was a 1979 'rally bred' Datson 'Stanza', a very responsive car which I loved to drive.  Our next and last new car was a  1983 Mitsubishi Sigma 'Super Saloon' which we had for over 12 years.
We now have a Commodore which my wife drives, I drive a Rodeo ute and we both drive the Mazda van used in our business operations.  Also, but more in line with hobbies I have two antique trucks undergoing restoration.
