Cars, Trucks & Utes

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST CAR YOU OWNED?

Your first car would have been a little different to the car you drive today.
It probably had windows that you had to wind down by hand
No air conditioning, no seatbelts and a hard bench seat not bucket seats.
Who could forget the cars with the venetian blinds in the back window.
There were definitely no computers in the dashboard to tell you the outside temperature, you have forgotten to buckle up, or a door had been left ajar.
Post a comment with memories of your First Car.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET YOUR DRIVERS LICENCE?

How easy was it to get your Drivers Licence?
Did you have a written test or was it a quick drvie around the block?
How did you learn to drive, was it in an old bomb you drove in a paddock?
Post a comment with memories of getting a Drivers Licence.

WHAT ARE YOU DRIVING NOW?

Is it the DREAM CAR that you have been waiting years to buy?
It may be an old vintage car you have done up or are in the process of restoring.
Do you now own a couple of cars, some old and a current model.
Is it an old beat up car that gets you where you need to go?
Post a comment and talk about the car you own and drive now.

Learnt to drive in my Dad's Morris Oxford on uncles farm at Ardrossan. Getting the licence was drive around the block, 3 point turn in a narrow street, stop at a STOP sign and back to the cop shop to do a reverse park between the poles, then the cop defected my Dad's car for a nearly bald tyre.HA First car was an EJ Holden with a 186 XU1 motor, mated to a HQ three speed with an Impala straight shift. next mode of transport was 650 Yamaha after having to sell the car to pay for an uninsured prang. Scared myself silly on the bike so back to four wheels being HK Kingswood with Chev 307. XB John Goss coupe was next with 302 Cleveland...lots of go fast bits put on this engine. Sold the car in 1990 and bought a block of land in QLD, certainly worth more than any car good investment that one, but would love to get hold of a XA/XB coupe again, VL Commodore Nissan EFI motor was next, followed by VN Calais. These days its a Ford territory...great family car .

I remember getting my car licence at parramatta when all you had to do was a driving test around town with a burly  police seargent sitting beside you telling you to do this an that all at the last minute, and writing it down. Nerves were the order of the day, especially when i had learn't to drive in Dad's ford consul, mostly on sundays driving mum to church, and had my test in an EH holden, a much bigger car with different controls, as well as the hand signals you had to do in the day, so there was lots of one handed driving, and sometimes no hands,as you signal to stop or turn and change gears on the column at the same time. I remember completing my test outside the police station, with lots of people waiting around, and the seargent tells me to do a reverse park, which was only my second attempt ever and which succeded in doing fairly well, only for him to say "close enough i will walk the rest of the way",and after an eternity he finally turns to me and says "you'll do!"

Not sure how big your servers are or how much storage you have on the servers but it would be great if we could upload our vehicle photos.

I did a written test and answered question. I drove to the New Plymouth Races, with the Police officer of the day. Around the car park and back to the local police station. (I'd learnt to drive in my boyfriends Auto LS Monaro (1973) 2 door (Purple and black soft top)lol. I have a 1999 Huyndai in (Australia) and a Nissan Blue bird here in (NZ) lol. Hi Robyn and Jeff, Firstly, Thanks for such a great website. I thoroughly enjoy coming online at least once a week.  To some the idea of buying an old car is a daunting exercise. The main thing to remember is thinking with your head and not your heart. It can be an easy thing to get caught up in the emotion of buying any car but in particular an older one.  For persons like yourself the simple way is to buy something that is a common type of vehicle like an old Holden or Ford as the parts and service needs for these type of cars are usually the cheapest and also the easiest to work on. Enrolling in a Basic motor maintainance course at one of the Adult Ed. places would also be very beneficial. To me there is nothing more satisfying than doing a job on a car yourself that would in the past I would pay a mechanic to do.The costs can be very reasonable providing you are sensible. Another avenue is going to car shows and look in the paper for club days. Try these out and good hunting

Hi Robyn & Jeff, regardless of what old car you want the main thing is, it's a lot of fun. The best way to work out what to do is to work out If you like a particular brand or type of car. Then if you buy a copy of Just Cars or Unique Cars or similar you will find (generaly at the back) car clubs and some of the events they have planned. My wife and i are in the Cadillac club and we have been to a lot of fantastic places seen a lot of things and more important met a load of wonderful people. You don't have to spend a lot of money on a car to have fun. If you have any more questions email me at rhino56cad@REMOVETHIShotmail.com
