KEEPING FIT AND HEALTHY

Walking

is a common form of exercise as it does not cost anything and can be done on your own or with friends. Is it a little hard at times to go out walking if you are still working full time?

Let's talk about going for a walk, either in a group or on your own. How far do you walk and is it every day or once a week? Any suggestions that other might find helpful would be appreciated.

Going to the Gym

is another way to keep fit. The costs can vary depending on the gym you choose and the type of membership you buy. Joining group exercise activities like a water aerobics or a yoga class can also be a way to keep fit.

Share your experiences of going to the gym (good or bad) or an excerise class you are attending or have been to in the past.

Healthy Eating

is another very important part of staying healthy and there is lots of information available on this topic. The number of diets available to help you lose some weight are endless.

What do you do to eat healthy, maintain you current weight or try to lose a little? Share you thoughts on healthy eating and any ideas that you have found work for you.

Leave a comment and share your experiences of keeping fit and healthy.

I have joined a "senior" Zumba class held every Monday morning at 9.30am in the PCYC building in Clarkes Road, Loganholme.  It is a slower paced movement allowing for beginners, unconditioned and unco-ordinated bodies like mine, but it is a lot of fun, and who cares if you go left when everyone else is going right, as long as you keep moving, it doesnt matter.

I didn't start exercising until I was in my forties. I took over my daughter's gym membership and found I really liked it. Fifteen years later I am still going. I bought a bike in 2001 and enjoy riding along the bike tracks around Brisbane at the weekends. I do the occasional fun run and completed the Clem 7 Tunnel run in February. I feel so much more energised after doing an exercise session. Hope I am still at the gym in another fifteen years time.

I have always loved walking i'd say that is my main exercise. I purchased a big treadmill last year and I think it's great. I have just started to raise the level quite high I found I really like walking up hills I'm burning more calories. I love food and like to eat but I make sure I eat well and of course I like to eat cake and chocolate too but I balance it out. I took up Tai Chi 3 years yeas ago and really like the calming effect it can have on you and the socialising is good too. l Have just started doing the travelling thing and really enjoying it, overseas and Australia it really makes you feel alive to get out and explore. I have found my motivation sometimes is not what it used to be but I push myself to get on with it and find i'm glad I did.

I have always had the view that fitness and health are a priority as getting older and you enjoy life much more with this attitude. Too many people focus on work and building wealth as a priority. I figure living in such a lovely country as this a person only needs to be self sufficient to enjoy all the benefits so work is necessary and important but health should not be sacrificed for it. If more people got off their fat assess, got rid of maccas and that type of crap, ate healthy, stopped smoking and drinking alcohol, AND had a positive outlook the health system would not be under such pressure and costs would reduce. Get away from negativity. As I get older I like to do lots of bush walking, I paddle ocean racing ski's and just get out there off my bum and move around. Honestly, just do it, you will like it and it get dependant on it.

I have dogs too and they are a great motivator for getting out for a walk no matter what the weather, although we do prefer the cooler days. Unfortunately the walks are not very quick as one dog is almost 15 and of course they prefer to sniff more than walk. So since moving to Langwarrin I have joined a little exercise class held in a Church hall and get a pretty good work out for an hour twice a week. It is a lot of fun and I am getting exercise as well as socialising. A group of us go for coffee afterwards, but I keep strong and resist the donuts.

Since I have a gorgeous little dog, I walk him everyday before going to work. We wake up between 4:30 and 4:45am and off we go for a good hour. On week-ends, we get up a bit later of course but I make sure we wlak before it gets hot.
I own a big treadmill and time to time I jump on it walking very fust and running a bit.
I am addictive to walking, just loving it.

Well I am thinking about getting back into some sort of fitness program.  I have been fit all my life but find myself now putting on a bit of extra weight that I want to shift.  I thought that it was part of old age but am now thinking maybe that is just an excuse. I will let you know the results.

I didn't start exercising until after I turned 51. Wow! has my life improved!  Even if you are a committed couch potato, getting off your butt even after 50 will make you feel so much better.  Looking forward to the next 50.
