I have recently taken up a new hobby. I was thinking that I need something to stimulate my mind, do something completely out of the square and not just vegitate on the sofa glued to the idiot box. So I decided to learn to fly a R.C. Helicopter. Easy! you may say. Not so, in fact quite the opposite. It is nothing that anyone can teach you, similar to driving a car. Remember how you'd change the gears a forget to let the clutch out slowly and kangaroo hop down the road. Or let it out too quickly and stall. The salesman said "I can sell you a helicopter and an R.C. unit, but you'll be back next week and the next month replacing the pieces you broke when you 'stack it!'. Take my advice and buy a flight simulator and plug it into your PC and practice, practice, practice!!!" All I can say is it's bloody hard and frustrating BUT it is stretching my mental faculties which was the whole purpose of the exercise to begin with.

Illness took away my ability to craft, cook, read and write. I discovered computers and have never looked back.
I can read again as I can make the text as large as I need, I can type and then print my letters to my many penpals as well as email those who have also discovered computers.
I can talk to (and see) friends and family all over the world using Skype for far less cost than using a telephone and which is very difficult for me to hold.
A whole new world of crafting has opened up for me: I now make all the cards, calendars, photo albums, gifts, etc I would have bought in the past.
I have joined Retired OnLine computer club where I have made many friends at meetings, lessons and online,I have learnt many computer skills - check out their club newsletter - I made it.
And then there is the internet, my window to the world when I was too ill to even get out of bed. I live near the beach but spend a lot more time surfing on my computer these days!

I have a great love of all creatures great and small. Back in 2005 I read an article in the local paper about Assistance Dogs. I haven't looked back. I had finally found a passion. I became a trainer of these wonderfully special dogs and even though unwell, I still train Assistance Dogs, do pet and puppy training and training others to become Assistance Dog trainers.

I've just read Marlene from Wodonga's comments left June 2010. I think I love you. I would go to every Car,Rod Street Machine and Drag racing show if I could. We need more Marlene's in this world.

At the moment, my main hobby is looking busy while in my shed. I love to 'potter' around doing 'stuff' that I enjoy, that she does not appreciate. Her hobby seems to be finding things for me to do that I don't think need doing till later, you know stuff that you WILL do when you get around to it.

I love the sound of the abstract bead embroidery as I have not come across it before.  I enjoy doing embroidery that is a little different and breaks some of the old traditions so this sounds just the sort of thing I would enjoy - looks like I might have found a new type of embroidery to try.  - Thanks Cheryl

I 'discovered' beads shortly after I retired, and love making sculpured wire jewellery.  A year or two ago I found my absolute passion:  abstract bead embroidery - beads stitched onto fabric in abstract, imaginative, impromptu designs using nonconventional colour combinations and bits of mirror, coloured glass, etc.  The finished pieces can become bags or wall-hangings or... well, whatever other bright ideas I can come up with!
